THE BIG IDEA: Did the Democrats peak too early?

At the beginning of the year, it looked like Democrats were going to lose control of congress. It appeared that Republicans were in trouble during the summer.

Democrats had a lot of legislative victories. President Biden's approval rating improved. The price of gas went down. The special election in New York's 19th Congressional District was one of the bellwether contests that Democrats were able to win because of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn abortion rights.

The Republicans seem to have gained the attention of the public. Crime and the economy are issues where they have an advantage. GOP candidates in some marquee contests have inched up in the polls, and even deep blue Oregon looks as if it mightelect a Republican governor.

The question is whether or not Democrats peaked too early according to a veteran reporter.

The Democrats may have lost their edge. Andrew Busch is a professor of government and the author of Horses in Midstream: U.S. Midterm Elections and Their Consequence.

It is too early to say for sure what will happen, but there is a pattern that this year might fall into. Busch said that the president's party looked like it was going to be a disaster earlier in the year, then appeared to improve its position in late summer.

It is not clear whether any of them peaked, as opposed to being in trouble all along, but enjoyed a deceptive comeback that wasn't really grounded in the basics of the election.

Republicans have an advantage in those areas. Inflation is high but unemployment is low. Biden is not liked by a lot of people. Gas prices might go up again because of a recent decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. A majority of Americans think the country is in bad shape.

There is a chance that Democrats have a good November. It wouldn't be the first time that the party in power got walloped in the fall if they don't.

POLLS, POLLS, POLLS

The latest polls are rounded up by Chris Wilson.

Democrats breathed a sigh of relief when DonBolduc won the Republican Senate primary in New Hampshire. The Democratic incumbent, who won her seat by less than a point six years ago, held a large lead in the polls. The two House races in New Hampshire were shown to be toss-up by the St. Anselm poll.

It was a good week for incumbent governors. Democrats and Republicans enjoy double-digit leads in at least one poll, as well as Chief Executives enjoying double-digit leads in at least one poll.

SOUND LIKE A NERD

1934 is the best example of when the party in control of the White House won the election.

The Democrats did not have a lot of confidence going into the election. The Great Depression continued even after he was elected in 1932. Conservative opponents of the New Deal were active. The vice president of FDR predicted that the Democrats would lose 37 House seats. Other Democrats thought the Republicans would gain even more.

The New Deal was endorsed by voters who gave Democrats control of the Senate and the House. It was the most overwhelming victory in the history of American politics, according to Arthur Krock.

The New Deal legislation of Social Security and the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 were some of the most ambitious and significant legislation of the New Deal. The midterms matter.

SLEEPER RACE ALERT

There is a chance that Sen. Mike Lee, a conservative Utah Republican, could lose his seat. A Deseret News poll from late last month found him barely leading his opponent, Evan McMullin. Democrats don't have a candidate in the contest, so they support McMullin.

We wanted to know if McMullin could eke out a win.

Evan McMullin seems to be carving off moderate Republicans in order to capture a coalition of Democrats and independents. It is difficult to build a coalition in a conservative state. The good news for McMullin is that he was able to convince many Trump-averse conservatives in Utah to vote for him.

It's not known whether those same Republican voters will break for him again. Even though he protested Trump's presidential nomination, Sen. Mike Lee eventually found a way to work with Trump. It is difficult to say how many moderate Republicans in Utah have gone through the same political path.

If McMullin pulls off an upset, it will be because he has built an unlikely coalition of people against Donald Trump. Given that Trump is no longer in office, this would be a huge achievement.

Inflation and economic concerns are issues that tend to play better for the Republicans. If McMullin is elected, Utah voters will no longer want Trump in Washington.

WHAT TO WATCH

The candidates will debate next week.

There will be a debate in Ohio on October 10. Republican Sen. Ron Johnson debated his Democratic opponent in Wisconsin.

In Georgia, Herschel Walker will debate Sen. Raphael. According to a story in the Daily Beast, Walker paid for a girlfriend's abortion even though he was against it on the campaign trail.

The debate in Georgia is expected to make some news. Walker tried to lower expectations about his performance. I'm from a country The former college football hero told the Morning News that he wasn't that smart.

The man is a preacher. nock wears nice suits. He is going to make me look bad at the debate.
