Tua Tagovailoa will not travel with the team for Sunday's game against the New York Jets because he is still in the concussion protocol.

A minimum of a four-game absence is what the third-year quarterback would need if he were to be placed on injured reserve.

Tagovailoa was carted off the field in the fourth quarter of the game.

Red flags were raised after he appeared to show symptoms from his head injury. He started for the Dolphins the next day.

Changes to the concussion protocol were agreed to by the two sides after the situation was investigated.

After the Cincinnati game, Tagovailoa was taken to the hospital, but he was released later that night and gave a positive update on his account.

There doesn't seem to be a timetable for the quarterback's return after he was ruled out of the Jets game.

Tagovailoa won't be the starting quarterback for the Dolphins. The veteran is one of the most experienced backups in the league, with 63 starts across four different teams, including 14 with the Broncos last season.

In two appearances with the Dolphins, the quarterback has 192 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The backup role will be taken over by a young man.
