Don't be surprised if a new variant of Covid emerges this winter according to Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Fauci said at an event with the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism that they should expect another variant that would evade the immune response that we have gotten from infections and vaccinations.
The seven day moving average of new Covid deaths in the U.S. is 323 as of Wednesday. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the country had between 1,000 and 2,500 cases in February and March.
Fauci urged Americans not to let their guard down because there is always a risk of an increase in precipitation. He said that it would be a bit cavalier to say that the epidemic is over.
When the U.S. saw low Pandemic trends in the summer of 2021, the omicron variant emerged and caused a record-breaking surge in cases. Multiple subvariants of omicron have spread in the US.
The data from the CDC shows that BA.5 makes up 81.3% of all cases. Research shows that the original Covid vaccines are less sensitive to antibodies than the original omicron strain.
Fauci said that they shouldn't be surprised if another variant emerges this winter. It is unclear whether any of the new subvariants will surpass BA.5 as the country's dominant Covid strain.
It's crucial to get a new Covid booster. If you've completed your primary Covid vaccine series, you're eligible for one. According to a survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, a third of Americans say they have already received a new booster.
Fauci said that the updated vaccine is directed at the major circulating variant.
