According to a New York Times report, Donald Trump may not have turned over all the White House documents.
After the FBI collected thousands of pages of material, including hundreds that were marked classified, and in the midst of an ongoing review of the seized items, the news came.
According to The Times, a Justice Department official told Trump's lawyers that the agency believes he has not returned all the documents.
It's not clear what new evidence the DOJ has that prompted the official to reach out.
The Department of Justice didn't reply immediately.
According to The Times' sources, Trump's lawyers began to discuss whether to cooperate with the DOJ by hiring a forensic firm to do more scans or by taking a more defensive approach. The team went with a more defensive response.
The FBI took at least 11,000 pages of official government documents from Mar-a-Lago. The material that Trump's team returned after the National Archives and Records Administration requested them is not included.
The number of documents is close to 200,000 pages, as part of their argument that the November 30 deadline for a special master to review all the material is too rigid.
The FBI recovered 48 empty folders that were marked classified. There hasn't been any indication that there were documents inside the missing folders.
The DOJ hasn't ruled out the chance of finding more records.
The representative for Trump didn't reply immediately.
