There is a person named Mario.
The first trailer for the film and its A-list Hollywood voice cast was shown during Nintendo's Direct. Compared to most animated features where it is common to stack up big names in the credits, this was a different animal.
I can see Jack Black in that role. Is Charlie Day going to play Luigi? Yeah, that's correct. Chris Pratt was going to handle his Mario voicework and how he would adapt his Italian accent for the film were all that anyone wanted to know.
Jack Black is great in this first trailer, and it features a lot more voicework than Mario. When we arrive, he has one line, and another when he bounds off after Toad.
The first line makes it seem like he isn't doing an accent at all. It sounds like ChrisPratt is leading the LEGO movie again. There is more of an Italian uncle from the Bronx accent you can hear in the second line. It is faithful to the concept, but it is far away from Charles Martinet's famous "It's-a me-a!"-ing" That may have been necessary for a feature. It will most likely be okay.
I think the trailer is quite good. The humor is on point, as Bowser storms a penguin ice city to be hit by snowballs before he sets it ablaze. There were a few yelps from Charlie Day's Luigi as an end tease. As of now, we don't know what Anya Taylor-Joy's Peach is going to look like. I suppose he's in here as Donkey Kong.
This is probably going to be enjoyable. I think we are not going to have a repeat of the disastrous live-action movie decades ago, and this is probably going to destroy the box office when it arrives in April. I wouldn't bet against it, despite the controversy surrounding it.
It feels like it will be the first step in Nintendo turning more and more intellectual property into multimedia projects, following an industry trend that is now churned out game-based TV shows and movies. I think we will see a Legend of Zelda live action series one day, even though it was canceled after news of it was leaked. This April marks a new era for Nintendo.
