Canadian Tire Corp., a retailer that sells hockey equipment to children, ended its partnership with Hockey Canada on Thursday, raising the pressure on the sports governing body that has been mired in controversy over its handling of sexual assault allegations at the elite level.

Jane Shaw, senior vice-president of communications, said in an email that Hockey Canada continues to resist meaningful change. Canadian Tire decided to end its partnership with Hockey Canada.

Canadian Tire is the first major sponsor to have a long term relationship with Hockey Canada.

Hockey Canada has lost its sponsorship of all men's hockey programming for the next two decades, including the World Junior Championships set to kick off in December.

Hockey Canada needs to take strong and definitive action before Canadians will trust it again. The lack of progress that Hockey Canada has made to date is very disappointing.

Hockey programs will continue to be funded by the coffee chain.

Hockey Canada's relationships with Bank of Nova Scotia and Telus Corp. will remain on pause, the two companies said.

In June, we wrote an open letter to Hockey Canada, calling for the game to be held to a higher standard.

The other sponsors had similar statements. The company said it was deeply disappointed by the lack of action and commitment from Hockey Canada.

A woman in London, Ont., claimed that eight players, including some from Canada's world junior team, sexually assault her in June of last year. Hockey Canada, the Canadian Hockey League and the eight unnamed players were all sued by a woman in April. Hockey Canada paid an undisclosed amount to settle the lawsuit.

Hockey Canada leaders testified this week that annoyed politicians. According to the National Post, the interim chair of Hockey Canada told lawmakers thattoxic culture and a culture of silence exist at Hockey Canada, but that they also exist in other parts of society.

Skinner doesn't think it's a good idea to say that it's a specific hockey problem or that it's a symptom of toxic culture. Skinner said that Scott Smith deserved an "A" for his conduct.

Trudeau and St-Onge have both called for Hockey Canada executives to step down, with Trudeau saying it "boggles the mind" how the organization isn't taking the controversy more seriously.
