Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is a joint venture between Wizz Air and Abu Dhabi Development Holding. It is much longer than you would expect.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi’s new route to the Maldives

Wizz Air launched a service between Abu Dhabi and Male. The route is run by an A321neo.

The male is arriving at 7:50PM.

The male arrived in Abu Dhabi at 1:35AM.

The flight is not allowed from Abu Dhabi to the other side of the world. You will see why if you look at the flight path.

Below is a map of the inaugural return flight from theMaldives to Abu Dhabi, which took 5 hours and 17 minutes to complete. The plane's actual distance was 40% more than the direct distance.

Wizz Air’s inaugural Male to Abu Dhabi flight

The route is blocked at 4 hours 15 minutes from Abu Dhabi and 3 hours 55 minutes from Abu Dhabi. The flight to Abu Dhabi usually takes 3 hours and 30 minutes in the air, and flies an actual distance of 1,900 miles, a little over 1% beyond the direct air distance between the airports.

Why does Wizz Air take this routing to the Maldives?

The above maps show that Wizz Air Abu Dhabi's flight is longer because the airline doesn't fly between the two airports, but stays near land. Wizz Air flies along the coast of India and Pakistan before arriving in Abu Dhabi.

Wizz Air's A321neos don't have the certification to fly. Twin engine operations performance standards are referred to as etops. Airlines need to be able to fly over large bodies of water if there isn't a nearby diversion point.

It can cost a lot to get the certification. Wizz Air and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi have not flown over large bodies of water in the past.

You would think that this is something the airline would consider as it looks to expand.

  • It’s unpleasant to be stuck on Wizz Air Abu Dhabi’s A321neos for nearly two more hours than needed
  • It’s a huge waste of fuel and resources in general; I’m not sure how this is consistent with Wizz Air’s claim of being the world’s greenest airline

I want to know if Wizz Air Abu Dhabi pursues certification or if the route continues.

Bottom line

Wizz Air has launched flights to the islands. It is cool to see an ultra low cost competitor in the market, but it is not cool to see how Wizz Air is operating. The flight takes two hours more and covers 40% more distance than a direct flight would.

I want to know if Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is going to keep flying this route or if they are going to get certified for it. It seems like the kind of route you should only start with once you have the certification.

What do you think of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi?
