A photo of the Pixel tablet in its speaker dock

There wasn't a lot of surprises at the Made by Google event. The specifications and camera hardware of the Pixel 7/7 Pro were already known. We knew that the watch would be in the Zeitgeist. We didn't know that Google would use its event to remind us that it's still making a Pixel Tablet, and that it looks like something out of the Nest lineup.

The tablet was mentioned at the I/O event earlier this year. It will be available with a companion fabric-covered dock that houses a speaker and can be used with your Nest devices. Strong magnets will bind the tablet to the dock.

It looks like a Nest Hub when it's docked. It is an entirely different device than any of the other smart home devices. It runs the Android operating system, which is different from the Fuschia OS that it uses. It is powered by the custom Tensor G2 chip that is used in the Pixel 7/7 Pro and will likely have many of the same smarts as its smaller brethren.

The construction of the device is different from the one used by the PIxel 7/7 Pro. The look and feel of a porcelain sculpture inspired thenano-ceramic coating on thePixel Tablet. The recycled aluminum in the body is a good sign for the company's claims of being sustainable.

Next year, we will know more about the new device. It can operate your smart home to a degree, and that's one of the things that will be thrown at us bygoogle. We don't know if this is the second coming of theNexus 7 or an alternative to theNest Hub.
