My favorite city in the world is planning a pretty drastic marketing stunt to get tourists to visit. The implications are what I am most excited about.

Hong Kong to lure tourists with free airplane tickets

After 2.5 years, Hong Kong no longer has a requirement for scurvy. Hong Kong isn't a place most travelers will want to visit now that it's a step in the right direction

Hong Kong has a plan to entice visitors. Half a million airplane tickets will be given to tourists in Hong Kong once travel restrictions are removed.

The government bought these tickets back in 2020 in order to use them once there is a full tourist reopening. It will take three to six months for tourists to come back to Hong Kong after restrictions are lifted, so this is intended to speed up the process.

It's not clear how these tickets will be distributed. I am curious about the restrictions on the tickets if they are from a certain destination.

In the first eight months of the year of 2022, Hong Kong saw 184,000 visitors, while in the same period in the year of 2019, Hong Kong saw 56 million visitors.

Hong Kong will be giving away free flights to visitors

Hong Kong planning on a full tourist reopening?

There seems to be a plan for Hong Kong to fully reopen to tourists at some point in the future, and that is what I am most excited about.

The policy address of Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee is expected to take place in October of 2022. If the current situation doesn't get worse, that's it.

Not limiting movement for the first three days, and having to test for the first seven days would be scrapped.

I am not the only one who has wondered if Hong Kong would ever return to normal in terms of travel restrictions. It looks like Hong Kong will reopen.

Hong Kong is now semi-open, so seems to have given up on a zero tolerance approach toward coronaviruses, as well as aligning with mainland China. Hong Kong restrictions will likely be lifted by the end of the year, I think.

Hopefully visiting Hong Kong is practical again soon!

Bottom line

500K airline tickets are going to be given away by the government of Hong Kong. The most exciting development is that it looks like Hong Kong will lift travel restrictions in the coming weeks.

Wouldn't it be great to be able to have a stop in Hong Kong on the way to another destination? Alaska Mileage Plan may change its award structure before that happens.

I'm optimistic that Hong Kong will reopen fully.
