It was announced on Wednesday that it is dropping another set of sensors. Is it the latest casualty? Ultrasonic sensors are usually found in the bumpers.

The models 3 and Y are the only ones that rely on cameras for the entire array of driver assists. After rolling out this change globally, the company says it will do the same for the Models S and X.

Despite dropping radar from its adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking functions, its vehicles have maintained or improved their active safety ratings in the US and Europe.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating hundreds of cases of phantom braking due to the removal of radar from the EV.

Model 3 and Y will not be capable of parking assist, auto park, summon, or smart if they don't have the Ultrasonic sensors. Once the vision-only system has reached parity with the old Ultrasonic sensors, the functions will be restored.
