David Petraeus, a former CIA director, said on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is in a "desperate" situation.
Petraeus said that Putin was "literally out of moves." The reality is that Russia will be confronted on the battlefield in Ukraine by a much larger force than they are.
Petraeus said that at the start of the war, Ukraine received billions of dollars in aid from Western countries, giving it an advantage over Russia.
Russia is thought to have lost a lot of money in battle. According to the Pentagon, Russia has suffered as many as 80,000 casualties in less than a year. Russia has lost thousands of armored vehicles and has pulled obsolete Soviet-era equipment out of storage to fill the gaps.
Russia is sending more troops to fight in Ukranian. Western officials and military experts said that Putin's recent decision to mobilize is a sign that Russia is failing in Ukraine and that the draft is unlikely to change the situation on the battlefield.
Thousands of Russian men have fled the country as a result of the Mobilization. More Russian men are probably leaving the country than head to conscription centers, according to Petraeus, who suggested that this is not how a country builds capable and competent and well-equipped forces.
The former CIA director said that the battlefield is desperate for Putin. It is no longer possible.
The "momentum on the battlefield is very much against Russia" with its forcesscrambling just to establish new defensive positions."
Four regions of Ukraine were annexed by Putin last week. Russian territory was reclaimed by Ukrainian forces as soon as Putin made the announcement. The areas that have been annexed by Russia are being taken back by the Ukrainians.
The retired general argued that there's still a lot of damage that Russia can do.
Missiles, rockets, bombs and so forth will be used on a daily basis to punishUkraine. They can't reverse the situation on the battlefield, which is going to see Ukraine taking back the territory that Russia has taken since February, and possibly taking back everything that Russia has taken from them.
As Russia struggles on the battlefield, the likelihood of Putin resorting to a tactical nuclear weapon increases. Since the beginning of the war, Putin has made a number of nuclear threats.
He said that a tactical nuclear weapon wouldn't change the situation on the battlefield for Russia.
It might make it worse. "But it won't reverse the situation in which Ukraine has a vastly bigger and better force than does Russia."
The conflict in Ukranian isspiraling out of control, according to the former CIA chief.
He said that it's important for the US to make clear to Russia that there will be severe consequences if they start World War III.
We don't want to climb the nuclear ladder with Russia.
The Biden administration told Russia there would be "catastrophic consequences" if it used a nuclear weapon.
Petraeus said he doesn't think Putin is suicidal and doesn't want to bring about the end of the Russian Federation. The Russian leader has a lot to lose, according to him.
