Musk wants to create a super app that will provide users with a wide range of products and services in a single interface.

The term "super app" was first used to describe WeChat, a popular app in China that has a variety of uses. According to an earlier story, the mini-apps connect every facet of life in China, from hailing a cab to booking a doctor's appointment.

In a town hall with employees earlier this year, Musk said that there was no equivalent out of China and that there was an opportunity to create that.

Other examples of super apps include Grab in Southeast Asia, which started out as a taxi- hailing app that now provides transportation, food delivery and financial services, as well as Alipay, a payment system owned by Chinese e- commerce giant.

When one user suggested it would be easier to create X as a separate entity from scratch, Musk replied that taking over Twitter would accelerate his plans to create X by three to five years.

If we can achieve that, or even get close to that, it would be an immense success.

Big Number

A little over one billion. Many of the users are based in China.

Contra

CNN asked experts if Musk's plan for a super app was doable. Several other social media applications are trying to become superAPPS. Experts told the outlet that anti-monopoly regulations could be barriers.

Key Background

After attempting to back out of an earlier offer to acquire the company under the same terms, Musk agreed to buy it for $54.20 per share, or $44 billion. Musk walked away from the deal because he believed the social media network had underestimated the amount of bot accounts on the platform. Four days after Musk backed out of the deal, he was sued by the company. The trial for the dispute is scheduled to start on October 17.

Tangent

Musk's idea for an app called "X" is new but his use of the letter isn't The online bank he co-founded in 1999 was called X.com. eBay bought the company for 1.5 billion dollars in 2002. The domain name X.com was bought back by Musk in 2017. There is a blank white page on the site. He formed three holding companies, each named with a variation of the name, leading to speculation that he could try to bring all of his businesses under one company.

The Super Alluring Dream for a 'Super App' was written by Musk.

It will eventually be part of 'X, the everything app', according to Musk.

It's possible that Musk wants a world-wide messaging service. It won't be easy.
