Jeff Shell said during an interview with CNBC that Peacock has 15 million subscribers. The service added 2 million paid subscribers in the third quarter alone, as Peacock's paid subscriber count remained the same during the first half of the year.
According to Shell, the growth was driven by the end of NBC's content-sharing deal with Hulu in September, which brought next-day streaming of shows like Saturday Night Live, Law & Order, and One Chicago to Peacock. The platform has the best sports offering of any streaming service with programs like Sunday Night Football and the upcoming World Cup.
Shell has 30 million active accounts that are watching them. We have paid over 15 million more than we did at the beginning of the year. The third quarter earnings results from NBCUniversal will be released on October 27th, so we will have to wait a bit.
In the past few months, Peacock has brought some of the biggest films of the year to the platform, with the exception of Halloween Ends, which will premiere on October 14. It is not clear when Nope will premiere on the service. Other big names coming to the platform include The Continental, an upcoming JohnWick spinoff series, and a Community movie along with non exclusive rights to the series.
CNBC asked Shell if NBCUniversal would want to buy the entire thing, after the interview. Shell says that they would like to own the streaming service. It isn't what we expect, but it's a valuable asset. There is a disagreement over the value of the Hulu stake. The original deal had a value of $27.5 billion.
There is a disclosure regarding the investor in the company.
