Fighter jets from the US and South Korea dropped bombs on the Yellow Sea during a live fire exercise.

According to the Associated Press, a short-range missile fired by the South Korean military malfunctioned and exploded after crashing into an air force base.

The explosion and fire from the crashed missile caused alarm among the residents of Gangneung, according to the report.

The explosion may have been caused by a plane crash, as a result of the lack of an official announcement from the military.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the Ronald Reagan, and its strike group will return to the East Sea between the Korean peninsula and Japan, in what the South Korean military says is a "very unusual" move that projects resolve against Pyongyang's recent provocation, according to a report.

The Democratic Party accused the President's government of creating a "security vacuum." There is a report that the military blocked fire officers dispatched to the scene from extinguishing the fire.

The ruling party lawmaker from Gangneung criticized the military for failing to issue an official statement about the incident and not telling the locals in advance about the live fire drills. The Democratic Party said that the military should thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident, report it to the public, and promise to prevent a repeat of it.

Key Background

One of the most provocative missile tests carried out by the country took place early on Tuesday when a missile flew over Japan before falling into the ocean. Residents of two provinces in Japan were ordered to take shelter after the missile was fired. The missile used for the test was likely a longer-range variant of the Hwasong-12 IRBM which North Korea has claimed is capable of hitting the U.S.

After the successful launch of a North Korean missile, South Korea retaliated.

South Korea and the US fired missiles into the sea to protest the North Korean test.
