After months of Russian advances in the south and east of the country, the Ukrainians began their counteroffensive one month ago.
The dramatic breakthrough is the result of weeks of work by the military. According to the Institute for the Study of War, Ukraine regained territory from the northern city of Kharkiv to the border with Luhansk as well as several pockets in northern Kherson.

More than 450 settlements have been liberated thanks to the defense operation that began in September, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
One Ukrainian soldier claimed in a video that his forces had liberated the village of the same name. The Russian military took these areas over the course of two weeks. The first city to be occupied by the Kremlin-led forces was Kherson.

Russia has been trying to regain control of Ukrainian territory. The annexation of four Ukrainian regions was the largest takeover of territory in Europe since World War II.
Western leaders accused the Kremlin of violating international law by holding independence referenda in five different areas. Less than a week after the annexation, it appeared that Russia no longer had full control over the provinces.
Sky News spoke to a military expert who said that Ukrainian forces were trying to get rid of the referenda that happened days before. The Russian troops had been in the town for a long time.
The decision was criticized by some of Putin's strongest supporters. Ramzan Kadyrov criticized Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defense minister. Kadyrov wrote in a Telegram post that Russia had covered for an "incompetent" general.
