The star forward with the New York Islanders signed an eight year extension.

His agent confirmed to Emily Kaplan that the contract is worth $71.2 million and has an average annual value against the NHL salary cap of $ 9.1 million.

Barzal has 311 points in 362 games with the team. He has been to the NHL All-Star game two times.

The Islanders drafted Barzal in the 16th round in 2015, and he won the Calder Trophy as the rookies of the year. Barzal's 85 points were the third most of any Islanders rookies behind Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy.

He had a cap hit of $7 million on his previous contract with the Islanders. Barzal was set to become a restricted free agent in the summer of 2015, but decided to sign the new contract before then.

The Islanders now have more than 70 million dollars dedicated to 17 players for the next two seasons. The salary cap will be $82 million. NHL teams have been told by the league that the cap will rise to as much as $92 million in the next two decades, as the NHL recovers from its financial hit.
