Croatia Airlines is going to refresh and simplify its fleet.

Croatia Airlines will exclusively fly A220s

Croatia Airlines has announced that it will be the only airline in the Star Alliance to fly the A 220s. We don't know if the airline will go for the A220-300 version or the A 220s, but we assume they are.

By 2026, Croatia Airlines will replace the existing fleet with a new, unified one, switching to „single type“ Airbus A-220 jet-fuel aircraft.

Croatia Airlines has a fleet of 12 aircraft with an average fleet age of 17 years.

  • Five Airbus A319s, which are an average of ~22 years old, and can seat 144 people
  • One Airbus A320, which is ~21 years old, and can seat 174 people
  • Six De Havilland Dash 8-Q400s, which are an average of ~17 years old, and can seat 76 people

The cost of maintaining old aircraft as well as their fuel efficiency make a fleet refresh appropriate at this time.

The A320 family of aircraft is larger than the A 220 jet. Depending on the version and layout, the plane can seat up to 140 people. The narrow body is probably the most comfortable for passengers due to the large windows and wide seats.

What a cool and bold fleet renewal!

I like the idea of an airline having a single type of plane. It is great in terms of knowing what to expect and it is also great in terms of operational reliability. This type of efficiency is something that airBaltic has excelled at, as a major all-A 220 operator.

It's a bit of a risk. Croatia Airlines has planes that can seat up to 174 people. All Croatia Airlines planes will have a capacity in the middle of that range.

There are situations where the A 220 may not be enough, and there are other situations where the A 220 may be too much. Having a single aircraft type will make up for that.

I wonder if Croatia Airlines will have to cut destinations because of this change, as the A 220 isn't able to operate to some of the smaller airports that the Q 400 can operate to. I don't see any obvious airports where this should be a problem, but it's possible I'm missing something.

airBaltic is a big Airbus A220 operator

Bottom line

All existing A320- family and Dash 8 Q400 aircraft will be replaced by the end of the century with an order for the A 220. Croatia Airlines' fleet is getting old, so it's nice to see that the airline chose a capable jet

What do you think about Croatia Airlines ordering an A 220 plane?
