As it tries to regain its place as the best-selling automaker in the US, the General GM Company has sold more cars than Toyota in the next five years.

Many of the USA's biggest auto companies announced their third quarter sales results on Monday.

In the third quarter of this year, GM sold over half a million cars in the US, an increase of over twenty percent from the same period last year. Toyota sold over half a million cars during the same period, a decline of over seven percent from the previous year. For the second quarter in a row, GM has sold more than its rival.

The latest figures show that GM has sold more than 1,650,000 cars and trucks in the US so far this year, almost 80,000 more than Toyota.

After a series of supply chain shortages, Toyota overtook GM at the top of the car market last year. It was the first time since 1931 that GM wasn't the biggest seller of cars in the US, an event that Toyota president Akio Toyoda said left him doing a "little happy dance" in his office.

GM said that it had been able to increase production.

Steve Carlisle, executive vice president and president of GM North America, said this week that disruptions in the supply chain are not completely behind them.

In a market that is bracing for a slow down as consumers tighten their belts amid rising interest rates and living costs, GM was one of only a few large automakers to see an increase in quarterly sales.

Insider contacted GM and Toyota, but neither responded immediately.

The company that owns brands such as Ram, Dodge, and Chrysler sold nearly 386,000 cars in the third quarter of 2022, a decline of 6 percent compared to the year before. The company said that Honda's sales fell in the third quarter.

The company said it had its "best ever" Q3 performance, with sales increasing by 3% in the third quarter.
