Redmond's father helps him over line

The father who helped his son cross the finish line in Barcelona in the 1992 Olympics has passed away.

Redmond ran from his seat in the crowd to help his son, who had torn his leg.

They finished the 400m semi- final together.

The British Olympic Association said that his was an Olympic moment that will always be remembered.

The footage has been viewed millions of times on social media and the International Olympic Committee said on Twitter: "Our thoughts are with Derek Redmond and his family following the death of his father, Jim.

One of the most inspiring moments in Olympic history was brought about by them.

In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corp., Redmond said that when he got injured, he just wanted to finish the race and that his father ran over to him.

He said that he tried to talk him out of the situation. I told him I was going to finish because he told me I had nothing to prove. He told us that we would do it together.

"We did, and I cried as I walked over the line."
