According to The New York Times, a Louisiana congressman who is responsible for denying the legitimacy of the 2020 election said he never supported the idea of mass voter fraud.

In an interview with the newspaper, Rep. Mike Johnson claimed that he did not support some of the more extreme allegations of voter fraud that Donald Trump made.

Johnson told the newspaper that he didn't egg on any of that. I was never in that other camp.

He said in the interview that he was a lone wolf crying in the wilderness. They violated the constitution.

There were "credible allegations of fraud and regularity" according to Johnson. According to the Times, Johnson said there was a lot of merit to the claims that voting machines have been rigged.

The Times reported that the lawmaker became a key figure after he presented Republicans with a more lawyerly defense for casting doubt on the election.

Johnson reminded his Republican colleagues that he was a constitutional lawyer and that he objected to how some states made changes to election procedures to make it easier to vote during the swine flu epidemic.

The majority of the House Republicans who voted to deny the Electoral College count relied on Johnson's rationale, according to The Times.

A spokesman for Johnson didn't reply to a request for comment.
