The stepmother was arrested and charged with malicious castration after her stepson was brought to a hospital with burns and injuries all over his body.
A child was brought to an emergency medical center in Wilson in July with third-degree burns as well as "injuries to the head, face, arms, legs, back and genitals"
Some of the wounds appeared to be in the healing process and medical staff determined they were not self- inflicted.
The Wilson County Sheriff's Office got a referral from the county's Department of Social Services that the child was possibly being abused. News reports didn't specify the child's age.
The child's stepmother was arrested on September 30. She is accused of attempted murder, malicious castration, first-degree kidnapping, and child abuse with serious injury.
The identity of the child's stepmother is not being protected by the newspaper.
She is being held on a large bond.
