Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against CNN on Monday, accusing the network of defaming him in order to stop his political campaign.
The lawsuit focuses on the term "The Big Lie" about Trump's false claims of widespread fraud that he says cost him the 2020 presidential election.
CNN didn't make a comment immediately.
Conservative followers found Trump's attacks on CNN to be popular. He has filed lawsuits against large tech companies that have been unsuccessful. A California judge threw out his case against the social media company.
Numerous federal and local election officials in both parties, a long list of courts, top former campaign staffers and even Trump's own attorney general have all said there is no proof of election fraud.
According to Trump's lawsuit, "The Big Lie" has been used more than 7,700 times on CNN.
He said that it was intended to scare and cause harm.
Similar lawsuits would be filed against other news organizations according to Trump. He said he might bring appropriate action against the House committee investigating the Capitol attack. As he ponders a possible bid for the presidency in 2024, he is being sued.
According to several published reports, the new CNN chief privately urged his news personnel to refrain from using the phrase because it is too close to the Democratic Party's efforts to brand the former president.
