Main benefits and perks

Frequent Delta flyers can take advantage of the Delta Reserve Amex. Delta loyalists who would like lounge access will benefit the most. The perks and benefits of the Delta Reserve Amex are discussed in greater detail.

Lounge access

ALBERTO RIVA/THE POINTS GUY

The main reason to use the Delta Reserve Amex is lounge access.

When traveling on a same-day, Delta-marketed or Delta-operated flight, the Delta Reserve Amex provides complimentary access to the Delta Sky Club lounges. When traveling on a Delta partner airline flight that isn't marketed or operated by Delta, a fee of $39 per person per location can be paid by cardmembers.

Sky Club guest passes are given to cardmembers upon account opening and every year thereafter. The guest passes will show up in your wallet. Up to two guests or immediate family can be brought into the Sky Club with you if you pay $39 per person per location.

When you fly Delta with an American Express card, the Delta Reserve Amex will give you access to the American Express lounge for free. You can bring up to two people into the lounge for a fee.

Annual companion certificate

CHRIS DONG/THE POINTS GUY

The companion certificate is a major benefit of the Delta Reserve Amex. The companion certificate can be used for one round-trip ticket in first class, Delta Comfort+ or Main Cabin. You don't have to pay taxes on the second ticket.

Unless you live in Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, you can't travel within the United States. You can only book tickets in certain classes.

  • First class: I and Z.
  • Comfort+: W and S, but only when L, U, T, X or V classes of service are available in the main cabin.
  • Main Cabin: L, U, T, X and V.

Depending on what you redeem your companion ticket for, you could end up saving hundreds or even thousands of dollars each year.

Earn MQMs and an MQD waiver

If you spend $30,000 on your card in a calendar year, Status boost will help you earn 15000 MQMs and an additional 15000 bonus MQMs after spending $60,000, $90,000 and $120,000 in a calendar year. If you spend $120,000 on your card, you can take home up to 60,000 MQMs.

Delta Reserve Amex card members can earn an MQD Waiver based on their spending activity. If you make $25,000 or more in purchases on your card in a year, you can get a Waiver for Silver, Gold or Platinum Medallion status. If you fly enough to meet the airline's MQM requirement, but not the MQD one, this can be useful.

Getting upgraded on Delta is the ultimate guide.

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

How to earn miles

MY AGENCY/SHUTTERSHOCK

When you make eligible purchases with the Delta Reserve Amex, you'll earn Delta SkyMiles.

  • 3 miles per dollar on eligible purchases made directly with Delta.
  • 1 mile per dollar on all other eligible purchases.

Even with 3 miles per dollar on airfare, you may not want to spend a lot on the Delta Reserve Amex after you earn the welcome bonus. You will get a 4.7% return on Delta purchases and a 1.6% return on everything else. If you consider some other American Express cards that you can transfer to Delta, you can do even better.

The Delta Reserve Amex isn't a card that you can use to earn money. The Platinum Card from American Express is one of the best cards for airfare purchases, and you can charge your airfare to it even if you are a frequent Delta flyer.

If you book directly with an airline or through Amex Travel, the Amex Platinum will give you 5 Amex Membership Reward points per dollar spent on airfare purchases, on up to $500,000 on these purchases per year. If you choose, you can either use one of the issuer's 18 other airline partners or transfer Amex Membership rewards points to Delta at a1:1 ratio. You are not tied to a single frequent flyer program.

The Amex Platinum is a great credit card for Delta flyers.

How to redeem miles

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

It can be hard to redeem Delta SkyMiles after Delta pulled its award chart and switched to variable pricing. In some cases, the effects of variable pricing can be mild. The lowest economy class fare of 15,000 miles is highlighted by Delta, but other dates have much higher prices.

DELTA.COM

When you start to look at holiday travel, such as these one-way, economy awards between Los Angeles (LAX) and Cancun (CUN), the price fluctuations get more intense.

DELTA.COM

Prices can go up when you talk aboutcabin awards. When booking with other programs for next year, you can probably do better than the one-way awards between London-Heathrow and LAX.

DELTA.COM

You would be better off saving your Delta miles for a flash award sale if you have the flexibility to do so. We have seen deals for domestic awards from 2,000 SkyMiles each way to New York and from 12,000 SkyMiles each way to Bogota. SkyMiles can be used to fly on international SkyTeam partner airlines such as Air France and Korean Air, as well as select non-alliance partners.

Premium alcoholic beverages in Sky Clubs as well as hotels and rental cars can be redeemed for Delta Skymiles. Some redemption options may not provide much value.
