According to sources, Karl- Anthony Towns was hospitalized last week with a throat infection that made him have trouble breathing and forced him to be on bed rest.

Towns spoke to the media Monday for the first time since falling ill, but he didn't reveal the nature of the illness.

He didn't get clearance to walk until Saturday, when he attended a team event.

I'm not done with my recovery. Before the team left on a 10-day preseason road trip, Towns said he was still getting better. During the illness, there was more to worry about than basketball.

Towns won't play in the preseason opener against the Heat in Miami on Tuesday as he works on ramping up his conditioning, according to the coach. He had stem-cell treatments in his knees, ankle, wrist, and finger. He signed a contract extension that will keep him with the team for the next five seasons.

When he was named to the All-NBA team, Towns averaged 24.6 points, 9.8 rebound and shot 42% on 3-pointers.
