Despite the struggles of the lowest-ranked offense in the league, the Carolina Panthers will not be able to use Sam Darnold.
According to a source, Darnold is not close to being fully recovered from the ankle injury he suffered in late August.
The source said that it's going to be a while before he returns.
"Maybe next week, but he won't be ready to come off IR this week,'' Rhule said.
Through four weeks, the quarterback's passer rating is the lowest in the league, and his completion percentage is the third worst in the league, only better than that of two first-round draft picks.
The Carolinas fell to 1-3 after Sunday's 26-16 loss to the ArizonaCardinals. There were three turnovers, two of which were lost and two of which were thrown away.
The competition for the starting quarterback job was won by the top overall pick in the draft, Baker Mayfield.
He was injured in the preseason finale against the Bills. The quarterback's total QBR was ranked 29th among qualified quarterbacks when he was the starter.
The problem of scoring points has been an issue for Rhule. Carolina is 1-26 in 37 games under Rhule when the opponent scores at least 17 points and has lost 24 straight.
PJ Walker is the only other quarterback on the roster after Matt Corral was placed on injured reserve.
Rhule said thatBaker is the quarterback.
