Last year, it was third-year point guard Ja Morant, who increased his scoring to average to 27.4 points per game from 19.1 during his sophomore season, and led the Memphis Grizzles to the league's second-best record. There are plenty of young candidates who are ready for the leap despite the high bar set by Morant. Second-year players, such as Josh Giddey, could build off their rookies' success to take the next step. Aside from Ben Simmons getting some run at center, it will be Claxton with the biggest chance to succeed. During the playoffs, the young man had several good stretches, but his most important was when he was fighting for minutes with veterans. In four games against the Boston Celtics in the opening round, Nash went mostly with Claxton, who responded with an average of 10 points, 6.3 rebound and 2.3 blocks per game.
