Judge is trying to hit his 62nd home run.
To the disappointment of Yankees fans who attended the team's weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles, the big man didn't hit his 62nd home run of the season, collecting just one hit in 13 plate appearances.
It would have been nice to hit it at home, but I have a job to do. The season is not over yet and we need to get ready for the playoffs.
A potential American League record-breaking home run felt like a foregone conclusion. Fans at Yankee Stadium stood up and cheered when Judge came to the plate, but a silence fell over the crowd before pitchers began throwing towards the plate. The fans booed every ball thrown by the pitchers.
The Yankees manager said it had been a lot. I don't think it's worn him down as much as it is that time of year. He wants to get it done and get it over with, but I don't think that's weighed on him.
While Judge failed to hit a home run in the Bronx, he will have at least four chances this week as the Yankees close their regular season against the Texas Rangers. He wants to play in Texas every day.
"Maybe not both of the doubleheader games, but we have a few days off through the wild card to the ALCS," Judge said.
The last time Judge missed a game was in August.
The Bronx fans were disappointed not to see history, but they were made aware of the difficulty of what Judge was attempting to accomplish. Baseball is still a game in which failing seven out of 10 times as a hitter leads to success despite seeing Judge hit moonshots.
It's difficult to hit a home run when you know where you are in the season. A lot of things have to work together. We have to move on even though it would have been great here.
