One day after Putin claimed to have annexed the region, his supporters criticized the military's retreat from the city.

In a move that was widely rejected by the West as illegal and invalid, Putin signed a decree on Friday that claimed four regions in Ukraine were now part of Russia. Russian troops were forced to retreat from an area Putin just declared part of Russia after Ukrainian troops entered the city of Lyman. Putin claimed to have annexed the area.

Ramzan Kadyrov, leader of Chechnya and an ally of Putin, said in a Telegram post that Russian military leadership had "covered for" an "incompetent" general that should be sent to the front to wash his shame off.

Yevgeny Prigozhin is a close friend and supporter of Putin. He said to send all the garbage with the machine guns to the front.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei K. Shoigu was accused of military failures after the successful counteroffensive in September. Protests were held in Russia after Putin increased the war by sending troops.

China and India appear to be on uncertain ground with Putin. Both countries abstained from voting in the UN Security Council's condemnation of Putin's annexation of Ukraine.

Russia was the only one that voted against it.
