It's time for the rest of the country to pay attention to the Big 12 team that's opened the season and deserves to be ranked.

It's not Kansas. We are talking about a school.

The Horned Frogs were not considered a contender in the Big 12 this season, but Sonny Dykes has injected some life into the offense, and Max Duggan has become one of the nation's most productive quarterbacks.

If you weren't a believer before Saturday, the 27 points the Frogs held on Oklahoma in the first quarter should have made you believe. This game provided an answer to the question of how many big plays are needed before Venables' head explodes.

play

As he hauls in the 73-yard touchdown, no one is around to watch him.

Four plays of 60 yards or more were part of the 668 yard performance by the Frogs.

The quarterback threw for 302 yards and three touchdown and also ran for 116 yards and two more scores. The stat line looked similar to that of Sooners fans. In the playoffs, the only other Big 12 quarterback with 300 pass yards, 100 rush yards, three pass touchdown and two on the ground in the same game was Oklahoma's Jalen Hurts. The playoffs have seen just eight players from any conference hit those marks against a Power 5 opponent.

Is it time to think about TCU as a potential Big 12 champ if Oklahoma can't make the playoffs?

The Frogs have won their last two games against SMU and the Sooners. The 55 points scored by Oklahoma was the most allowed by the Sooners since the Peach Bowl. It came against LSU. In 2016 Oklahoma allowed 55 or more against an unranked opponent. It was against Patrick Mahomes. That's really bad.

It's worth pointing out that the Frogs couldn't deliver on their mid-game troll. Until the Frogs score 62, the Maris family will need to attend every game.

Some of the Week 5 games offered a glimpse into this season's pretenders and contender.

Kentucky was dealt a blow by the Ole Miss defense. The early season buzz around Minnesota was snuffed out by Boilermakers. Michigan defeated Iowa on the road.

Kentucky had a chance to pull off a road win, but an early safety and two late turnovers proved to be the difference in the 22-19 Ole Miss win.

The absence of Mohamed Ibrahim showed. In a 20-10 loss to the Boilermakers, the Golden Gophers were held to 47 yards on the ground.

Iowa had a plan to lull Michigan to sleep. The Hawkeyes punted on each of their first five drives, which is usually a winning formula, but not against Corum, who carried 29 times for 133 yards and a touchdown in Michigan's 2714-7 win.

U-Can!

The University of Connecticut has a win.

Take a moment to think about what you're feeling.

The Huskies engineered a 94-yard drive to score a go-ahead touchdown with 2:20 to play, and they went on to win the game.

It had been a long time since the University of Connecticut won a game. In the last month, 23 teams have announced they're changing conferences, Miami has been back eight times, and James Madison has won three games in a row.

How long has it been since the University of Connecticut did something like Saturday's win? The money line for a Connecticut win was +1050, but the Huskies pulled off a victory. In the last win, it was at home against UMass, which was also awful. You have to go all the way back to the year of the upset to find it. This was five years ago.

The beauty of the football program at the University of Connecticut. It serves as a time capsule for the rest of us so that we can measure how far we've come.

Break up the Illini

It feels like an appropriate time for the college football world to take a quick step back and ask a question that has frustrated philosophers, scientists and scholars: Hey, is Illinois good?

The Illini are 4-1 for the first time in three years, thanks to a Syracuse cast-off and a dominant run defense. It was Illinois' biggest road win in three years, and it ended an eight-game losing streak at Camp Randall.

Tommy DeVito ran for minus 2 yards in the game, but he also had three rushing touchdown. It's rare for a running back to have five fewer rushing yards than rushing touchdown, but at Illinois, DeVito has managed to combine a new-found scoring touch to go with his long-established ability to serve as a tackle dummy. Even though he started just 18 games, DeVito was sacked 70 times. He's been dumped in the backfield 11 times this season, but he's also racked up 12 touchdown and two interception

The defense has been the key to Illinois' success. The 2 rushing yards on 24 carries by the Wisconsin was the worst output on the ground in the last two years. The Illinois defense has allowed less than 100 yards rushing in four of their last five games.

The most college football thing to happen Saturday

The Boston College quarterback threw for 304 yards and three touchdown in a 34-33 win over Louisville on Saturday.

The throw that will show up most on SportsCenter this week wasn't very good. The ball was thrown backwards in the direction of running back Pat Garwo III by Jurkovec. It became silly from there.

This was ugly. Like real ugly.Trying to avoid the sack, BC QB Phil Jurkovec threw the ball away, but it went backwards.BC RB Pat Garwo III tried to recover the now-fumble. Instead, though, Louisville's YaYa Diaby hopped on it.

All's well that ends well Boston College earned its first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season, as Louisville couldn't hold onto the lead and lost to the Eagles.

Under-the-radar play of the day

Jaivian Lofton's catch to open the scoring in Liberty's game against Old Dominion should be included here. It's a one-handed catch on a touchdown. This one is over the top because of the response.

play

The quarterback lofted a ball into the end zone, where Jaivian Lofton made a one-handed catch.

He picked up a DoorDash order at the restaurant. There was zero emotion. This is what we hope Lofton is like. Is it possible to ace a test? No big deal. Do you think you'll win the lottery? He's going to give you his number in the morning. Find out if Kansas is a perfect 5. No one could accept that.

Under-the-radar game of the day

Holy Cross beat Harvard 30-21 on Saturday to improve to five wins and claim to be the best team in Massachusetts.

The Crusaders' Matthew Sluka threw for 300 yards and two touchdown in the victory. Since its opener, Harvard has lost a game by more than one possession.

The Crusaders have a perfect record, including a road win against Buffalo last month. BC and the University of Massachusetts are both below.500 for the season. Stonehill is the only other contender and we just learned that they were in Massachusetts.

Big bets and bad beats

Syracuse was cruising toward an easy cover over the weekend, but it turned out to be a bit too easy.

The line closed at Syracuse at -54, which made sense given that the team had already lost to Rutgers by 59. Syracuse jumped out to a 49-0 lead at the half and it wasn't surprising.

I think the cover is easy.

Sports books didn't take bets after the white flag was waved.

The bets didn't count because of the shortened quarters, but Syracuse won 59-0. It's great to see that Caesars had the courage to say what the other people were thinking.

The service academies offer something close to easy money. The first Commander's Cup game of the season took place on Saturday when Air Force hosted Navy. How much was the total? Doesn'tmatter. Bet the under whatever the total is. The under in Commander's Cup games has been 22-2-1 in the playoffs, and it has hit 75% of the time.

The total ended at 38. A low number is what it is. It's low enough to be concerned about the under. It's not true.

Air Force scored on its first drive on a 67-yard pass play. Are you worried now? Still no.

There were 10 punts in the game. A touchdown, two field goals, a turnover on downs, a missed field goal and a seven-play drive chewed up the final 3:49 of the game.

That is a recipe for someone else to follow. The final score was Air Force 13.

Two of the three service academies have been featured in nine straight games that the under has covered.

Oklahoma State jumped out to a huge lead and went on to win. The Cowboys were a 2.5 point favorite. Oklahoma State is 14-3 in games when the spread is 3.5 points or less since the start of the 2016 season.
