The advertising legend behind award-winning ads for many brands has died at the age of 77.

The ad agency was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1982. The agency worked for companies like McDonalds and Bud Light.

The agency helped a sneaker company become one of the most recognizable brands on the planet. In 1988, Nike's "Just Do It" was first aired in a TV commercial.

"Thank you Dan, for making the doors wide open for people to live up to their full potential," the account said in a post. We are going to miss you a lot.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the death. The company said in an obituary that he died peacefully with his wife by his side.

One of the most prestigious companies in the advertising industry was Wieden and Kennedy. The firm is known for hiring people with different perspectives. The former creative director said that Wieden once asked, "Why would I hire ad people?"

The obituary said that the intention was never to create a huge advertising agency but rather to provide a place where people could do the best work of their lives.

The ownership of the agency was transferred into a trust by the man who said he wouldn't sell it.
