The museum said that Schwarzeneggar visited the memorial to honor all the victims of the camp and deepen his knowledge about history that would help him fight against prejudice today.

After he was announced as the recipient of the newly created award, he wrote a statement about seeing hatred that "spun out of control."

In a statement at the time, he said that he was witness to the ruins of a broken country.

I share these painful memories with the world to prevent future tragedies and educate soldiers about personal responsibility because I saw firsthand how this hatred spun out of control. The mission of the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation is to ensure never again.

At the age of 21, he moved to the United States from Austria, where he was born.
