The Los Angeles Angels and Shohei Ohtani agreed to a one-year contract that will make him the highest paid baseball player in the world.
It is the largest salary ever for a player who is eligible for the awards. Ohtani will be free to sign a new contract after the 2023 season.
Saturday's announcement coincides with a 15-game hitting streak and a no-hitter by Ohtani.
On the mound, Ohtani's 15 victories rank fourth in the American League, his 213 strikeouts are third and he has a 2.35 earned run average. He's fourth in the league in home runs with 34 and seventh with 94.
He is making a lot of money.
Ohtani is one pitch away from guaranteeing himself a spot in the league leaders when the season is over. Ohtani is expected to pitch in the finale.
