One of America's most recognizable pop culture icons is Marilyn Monroe. Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas was cast as Monroe in the new movie "Blonde".

According to a Variety article that first reported on the film's production, "Blonde" promises an untold look at the icon's Latina heritage and one of her final trips to Mexico."

Monroe visited her mother's birthplace frequently in the final years of her life.

The 20th-century film industry was no different. Monroe's fame and success was built on her image as the all-American girl, a persona she helped craft and control as she rose the ranks of Hollywood.

Monroe's mother was born in Mexico

Gladys Pearl Monroe was born in Mexico in the year 1901. The Monroes came to the town from Eagle Pass, Texas, after a series of droughts ravaged the Midwest in the 1980's.

At the time, American immigration to Mexico was common. In order to help with industrialization, the president of Mexico opened the country to foreign businesses. Otis Monroe worked at a railroad.

The Monroes moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1903 and the daughter of them was born in the same year.

She was placed in orphanages and foster homes due to her mental illness.

The creation of Marilyn Monroe

A year after signing an acting contract with 20th Century Fox, Norma Jeane became a model. Her stage name was Marilyn Monroe.

Monroe played a role in the creation of her public image as she was presented as an all-American girl. Monroe's signature look was pale skin, blonde hair, dark arched eyebrows, and a beauty mark. She made her big break with three movies in 1953 that made her one of Hollywood's most bankable stars.

Monroe used her persona to her advantage throughout her career. Sarah Churchwell said that she had to be very smart and tough to beat the Hollywood studio system.

The dumb blonde was an actress. Churchwell made a statement.

Many actors and actresses changed their names in the 70s and 80s to get jobs in Hollywood. For example, Margarita Carmen Cansino changed her name to Rita Hay Worth. After decades in the industry, she acknowledged her Latin heritage, but only after she grew up with a father who tried to be all things to all people.

Monroe began to use barbiturates and other drugs due to her lack of control on film sets.

Monroe traveled a lot to Mexico in the years leading up to her death.

She ate taco at El Taquito restaurant, which was serenaded by a mariachi band, after meeting Spanish directors like Luis Buuel. The Mexican director José Bolaos accompanied Monroe to the Golden Globes in 1962.
