The New York Yankees returned the veteran left-handed pitcher to the injured list after struggling in his attempt to return early from Tommy John surgery.
After being removed from New York's 2-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles the night before due to left arm fatigue, manager Aaron Boone announced Saturday morning that he would go back on the injured list.
He is doing well. It is something that we are running out of time for. One of the things that you don't want to do when you have a little bit of fatigue is reach for more. He's in a good position going into the summer.
After the World Series, the Yankees and Orioles' closer is free to negotiate with other teams. After undergoing left elbow reconstruction surgery and having a bone chip removed, the southpaw had a hard time returning to play. He was on the injured list for 60 days.
Before Saturday's game against Baltimore, Boone said that Britton's elbow looked fine and praised his determination.
"I'm just appreciative of how hard he's worked to get to this point, to give himself a chance, obviously, coming back quick by Tommy John's standards," he stated. The rehabilitation has been going well. He's up against the clock at this point in the season. I admire the fact that he put himself in this position and gave himself the chance.
According to sources, the Yankees are talking about a return to the team next year. The final season of a three-year, $39 million contract with the New York Yankees is currently being played by left-handed pitcher Britton.
Jacob Barnes' contract will likely be a short-term solution for the Yankees, who expect to get several relief pitchers back in the near future. The Yankees will play their last regular-season series of the year against the Texas Rangers in Arlington on Monday.
The Yankees will be short a man in the pen because they won't put Clay on the IL in order for him to be eligible for the playoffs. After being shut down for several days due to rotator cuff inflammation, he received a shot Thursday. The American League Division Series begins on October 11.
It will be a week of no-throw because of the injury. I think we're at the end of the day. He should start ramping up this week. If that goes well, he will be in the running for the division series.
He said Friday night that he would be ready for the playoffs if he worked out in the alternate site.
There will be some rest and build back up for the Division Series.
The Yankees will have five days off before they play in the ALDS. They have a plan in place to have hitters and pitchers work out at an alternate site.
The alternate site has eight or nine pitchers. They're going to work out and build a house in the area. "On the days they're scheduled to go, we'll have live pitchers there to go along with our own pitchers." There will be a lot of live scenarios for hitters and pitchers over the weekend. We have a plan in place to keep guys sharp.
The hitter that will benefit the most from the alternate site will be Matt Carpenter. He expects to be an option for the Yankees as they close out the season in Arlington, since he is close to being fully recovered from his foot injury. He lives in Fort Worth.
He's hopeful that Carpenter will be on the bench in the playoffs. A live batting practice has been taking place this week.
"That's exciting to think about, that's a possibility, that's a part of the playoffs," said Boone. He's doing great." The hitting is on point. He was running on the field. With the week ahead and what we have planned for the offsite. He should be able to get a lot of live at-bats over the next week or 10 days. Hitting has been good. He's in a good place after running today.
The Yankees signed Carpenter to a one-year contract at the end of May, a week after he was released by the Rangers. In 47 games with the Yankees, Carpenter was one of their biggest contributors at the plate, hitting.305 with 19 homers and 35 runs scored.
