The ice bucket challenge was a big hit. Normal people and celebrities dumped buckets of ice-cold water on their heads in order to raise money and awareness for a disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Ryan Seacrest threw an ice bucket over his head and called out David Beckham and Selena Gomez after he challenged Bill Gates. It was very busy.

The drug partly funded by the Ice Bucket Challenge was approved by the FDA on September 29th.

According to the association, the challenge raised $115 million from more than 17 million videos, which went towards the development of the newly-approved medication, Relyvrio. The Association's president and CEO says that it's proof that the Ice Bucket Challenge sped up the fight against the disease.

Pat and Pete Frates created the chill-inducing trend after they lost two friends to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease. "We are thinking of Pete Frates, who championed the Ice Bucket Challenge and changed the trajectory of the disease forever," he said.

An independent research organization conducted a survey about the impact of resources provided by the Ice Bucket Challenge. 84 percent of respondents said support from the Association since the Challenge accelerated their work, while 72 percent said funding improved their ability to get additional funding.

Lou Gehrig's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that can affect brain function until someone is no longer able to move, eat, or breathe. There isn't a cure.
