According to The Wall Street Journal, the Cuban government in a rare petition has asked the Biden administration for help with the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.

Cuba requested emergency assistance in the aftermath of Ian's rampage. The country did not request a specific dollar amount according to The Journal.

11 million people in Cuba were left in the dark after the entire power grid was knocked out by the storm. Three people died on the island due to the storm, according to The Associated Press.

According to The Journal, the US and Cuba are in the process of determining how much assistance is needed. Hospitals, water pumping facilities, and other important infrastructure would be prioritized by the Cuban authorities if the US sent assistance.

The State Department did not reply immediately.

Cuba is appealing for aid from the US. Donald Trump's administration reversed parts of an Obama-era deal that had loosened travel and commercial restrictions within the country and once more in 2021, when the US designated Cuba a state sponsor of terrorism, in order to further infuriate the nations.

Cuba is on the US terrorism watch list, but relations have been on the mend since Biden took office.

Russia is one of Cuba's key economic allies and is currently engaged in a war in Ukraine.
