Marriott's loyalty program has changed over the years.

Marriott completed its acquisition of Starwood and integrated it into its program. Marriott Bonvoy is the new name for the hotel group's loyalty program.

It implemented peak and off-peak pricing on award nights in September of 2019. Marriott changed to dynamic pricing in March of 2022. The days of predictable awards prices are over.

The hotel chain has a co branded credit card. The hotel group's top-tier credit card now has Platinum Elite status, 25 elite night credits and a free night award and is worth up to 85,000 points. Two new mid-tier cards were introduced, one with American Express and another with Chase.

How do you earn Marriott Bonvoy points? Marriott Bonvoy points can be earned in many ways, from hotel stays to co branded credit cards.

Points can be earned on more than one hotel room. You can earn points if you meet two conditions. You need to occupy one of the rooms first. All of the rooms have to be paid for. You'll only get elite nights on the room you're in.

Elite status bonuses

With Marriott Bonvoy elite status, you can earn more points on paid stays. The higher the status, the more money is earned. The rate you can earn at most Marriott hotels is based on your status tier.

  • General member: 10 points per dollar spent.
  • Silver Elite: 11 points per dollar spent.
  • Gold Elite: 12.5 points per dollar spent.
  • Platinum Elite: 15 points per dollar spent.
  • Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite: 17.5 points per dollar spent.

A welcome gift of up to 500 points is given to members with Gold Elite status. Courtyard, Fairfield Inn and SpringHill Suites provide just 250 points as a welcome gift.

There is a minimum of 500 points or a $10 food and beverage credit per stay for Platinum Elite members.

You usually get points on your hotel bill. If you order room service at the bar or charge it to your room, those purchases will earn you points as well. If you charge on-site expenses to your room, you'll get even more points.

Transfer points

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

You can transfer points from one account to another. You can look at your options.

Transfer points from Chase or American Express

Marriott Bonvoy is a member of both American Express and Chase. The programs allow you to transfer points at a 3:1 ratio.

We don't recommend it. Marriott points are worth 0.84 cents per point, while UltimateRewards points are worth 2 cents per point. In this transfer, you will lose over half of your points.

Transfer points from United MileagePlus

You can transfer United Mileage Plus miles to Marriott Bonvoy.

The partnership between Marriott and United has been called rewardsplus. The United and Marriott elites get benefits from this partnership. You cannot transfer more than 50,000 United miles to Marriott Bonvoy annually.

We don't recommend it because you'll lose value when you transfer. The United MileagePlus miles are valued at 1.21 cents per mile. If you are topping up for a redemption, you should transfer United miles to Marriott.

You need to hold United Airlines elite status to convert.

Transfer points between accounts

The Marriott Bonvoy program allows you to transfer points between accounts for free.

Up to 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy points can be transferred from one account to another. You can get up to 500,000 points on a single account. To participate in transfers, each account needs to be at least 30 days old.

You can call Marriott Bonvoy. Families who want to combine multiple account balances can use this. If a friend has points that are about to expire, they may transfer them to you.

Family points pooling is your ultimate guide.

Earn points by shopping and dining

Marriott doesn't have a shopping portal, but it does have other ways to earn points. There are limited options here.

Marriott dining rewards

Earn Marriott Bonvoy points when dining out at restaurants participating in its Eat Around Town program. CLINT HENDERSON/THE POINTS GUY

The Eat Around Town program is offered by Marriott. Marriott elites get 6 Marriott points for every dollar spent and non-elites get 4 Marriott points for every dollar spent. You will earn points for every reward you get from your credit card. If you link your credit card to the program, you will be able to eat at participating restaurants.

Do you want to get more points? Bonus points are earned on dining. The Chase Preferred Card earns 3 points for every dollar spent on dining. 600 Marriott Bonvoy points can be earned if you use the card to purchase a meal at a restaurant.

Is it possible to earn miles from two dining programs at the same time.

Buy a mattress

Buying a mattress from your Marriott hotel is a good idea.

Bonvoy members can earn Marriott points when they buy a mattress on any of Marriott International's online retail websites.

Earn points with travel partners

Earn Marriott Bonvoy points when you book other forms of travel, like cruises and rental cars. ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

Marriott Bonvoy points can be earned when booking other types of travel. There is a way to earn points when booking vacation activities and cruises.

Earn points on Hertz rental cars

Rents can be booked through Marriott's portal. 500 points can be earned on one day rentals and 2000 points on two days or more. Marriott Bonvoy points can be earned on rentals in the US, Canada, Europe, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia and New Zealand.

If you do this, you won't get points for your CarRentals. Do the math to find out which works best for you.

How to never pay full price for a CarRentals.

Book cruises through the Marriott portal

You can get a lot of Marriott Bonvoy points if you book a cruise through Marriott's CruisesOnly. You will get 3 points for every dollar spent on cruises booked through CruisesOnly.

There are surprising places that sell cruises.

Book vacation activities

Points can be earned when you purchase vacation activities through Marriott Bonvoy Tours. There are a lot of tours, transfers and events on the site.

How much you spend and the experience you book will affect the number of points you get. You can earn Marriott Bonvoy if you book a Chicago food tour for less than $65. 9,599 points are earned for every person on an Icelandic glacier tour.

To make sure the tour or activity isn't cheaper elsewhere, be sure to compare shop.

Ride or order food with Uber

You can earn Marriott points for food and ride orders. You'll get 3 points for every dollar spent on premium rides. When you stay at a Marriott Bonvoy hotel, you'll earn 6 points for every dollar you spend on delivery services. When you order at home or on the road, you will earn 2 points for every dollar you spend.

Save money on your next meal with food delivery promo codes.

Buy points

Buy Marriott Bonvoy points to top up for your next big redemption. TUPUNGATO/SHUTTERSTOCK

Do you need Marriott Bonvoy points fast? In a pinch, you can purchase them. Marriott usually sells points at 1.25 cents per point. You can buy up to 50,000 points per year, but the hotel group often raises this limit.

If you want to top up your account for a specific high-end award night, it makes sense to buy points. If you can buy points for a particular stay at a lower cost than you would pay in cash, it makes sense to do so.

Currently, you can buy points and miles with a bonus.

Bottom line

There are a lot of ways to increase your Marriott Bonvoy points balance. If you want to get a quick boost, apply for a Marriott credit card and spend enough to get a bonus. You can easily add tens of thousands of points to your Marriott Bonvoy account.

Sign up for the Marriott dining program if you want to take advantage of all the promotions. You will be on your way to a free night with a Marriott credit card.
