Luis Quinones, an exceptional and disciplined human being, who always showed the greatest commitment to this sport, has passed away. Luis left his hometown of Barrancabermeja to continue his boxing career in Barranquilla because he was so passionate about the sport. His hero was the leader of the opposition, Chavez.
Quinones was declared brain-dead on Thursday, but he was still connected to a breathing machine.
The two fought in a back-and-forth fashion. Quinones was sent to a neutral corner by Leonel Mercado in the eighth round after he lost his mouthguard. Quinones was knocked down after a punch when he was wobbly in the ring. The man was taken to the hospital on a stretcher.
Quinones was taken to the North General Clinic in Barranquilla, where he underwent surgery for brain damage he sustained in the fight. There was a subdural hematoma that was detected by doctors.
