When Toyota became the top-selling car in the US in 2021, the president of the company began dancing.
"I did a little 'happy dance' in my office," Akio Toyoda told a network of the automaker's dealers. No one saw it. The person said, "Toyokoda said."
GM had been at the top of the US market for decades, but was dethroned last year after a series of supply chain shortages. In the previous year, 2.5 million cars were sold by GM
The sales of Toyota's vehicles rose by 10.4% to 2.3 million. The reason was better management of its supply chains.
Jack Hollis, Toyota North America's senior vice president of automotive operations, downplayed its top ranking as America's bestselling car company, telling reporters "that is not our goal, nor do we see it as sustainable."
According to its website, Toyota has 10 manufacturing and engineering plants and 14 in North America. They produced over one million cars.
Supply chain shortages are beginning to bite despite its relative success. Toyota said it would make 50,000 fewer cars than it had previously predicted. Due to a shortage of semiconductors, some plants in Japan slowed down production.
In the month, Toyota expects to make over one million cars. It is on track to reach its target of 9.7 million by the end of the year.
Toyota didn't reply to Insider's request for further comment, which was made outside of standard business hours.
During Thursday's press briefing, Toyoda talked about the $70 billion investment in electric vehicles. The ban on the sale of gas and diesel cars in California could be difficult to achieve, according to him.
