Stadia will be shutting down in the new year. In some ways, the move isn't much of a surprise, as my colleagues have pointed out, there's been doubt about whether GOOGLE was in it for the long haul with Stadia.

You would be forgiven for not knowing what the company was saying about the service. There is a wonderful future for Stadia, despite rumors that it was about to go bust, and that players should keep using it. Now that Stadia is being shut down, let's take a look at the times when it wasn't possible.

October 2019 — “It is a long term view that Google is taking”

Jade Raymond, who was the head of Stadia at the time, said that it could take several years to come up with a huge game. She promised that it wouldn't be four years before they got to see the new content. Every year there will be more and more of them.

It would be a long-term commitment for the company to get cloud gaming off the ground. Raymond left the company just over a year later when Stadia was shut down.

Other studios believed that the company was going to be around for a long time. Gwen Frey told GamesIndustry.biz in November that she didn't think they wanted to have a strong launch. I understand that they want to scale slowly.

He talked about how other in the industry were worried about Stadia leaving. She said that the biggest complaint with Stadia was the fear that it would be canceled. She said that she had to be willing to make bold moves in order to work in tech. "It's not like they don't make anything anymore."

November 2020 — Aiming its sights at 2023

Jack Buser, the former director of games at Stadia, told MobileSyrup that there were 400 games in development from 200 developers. When talking about how the company was planning its release schedule, he said, "we're thinking about 2022. that's our focus." It is kind of where we want to go in the future.

He said that the company was looking many years out into the future, and that it was "unequivocally" in it. Take a few minutes to read the whole interview. It is interesting but sad at the same time.

February 2021 — “this is the best path to building Stadia into a long-term, sustainable business”

It seemed like Stadia was going to be a white-label service for companies rather than a cloud gaming service when it was announced.

The company remained committed to Stadia as a platform. Stadia general manager Phil Harrison wrote that the best way to build the business was to shut it down.

July 2021 — “A limited time incentive program”

The cut from sales on games launched on Stadia was adjusted in order to attract developers. There won't be a single game launching on the service in the years to come.

September 2021 — “gaming is an incredibly important vertical at Google.”

After Stadia lost games industry veteran Jade Raymond, another experienced executive was apparently moved off the project. Jack Buser was the Director for Games at Stadia.

The company said that Jack's new role would allow them to better bring customers the best of Google across their services.

November 2021 — “a bright future for cloud gaming”

It was less expensive to join Stadia when it was two years old. Although it didn't have a plan for Stadia's future, it was eager to continue working on bringing the best games and new features to the community. It promised to expand the types of games that were on the service.

February 2022 — seven months before the shutdown announcement

While we won't be commenting on any rumors or speculation regarding other industry partners, we are still focused on the task at hand We expect to add more than 100 games to the platform this year and have 50 games available to claim in Stadia Pro.

The Stadia team is working really hard on a great future for Stadia and cloud gaming, and will have more feature goodness coming to Stadia as well.

Screenshot of a twitter thread from the official Google Stadia account. It reads: If you hear one thing, hear this: The Stadia team is working really hard on a great future for Stadia and cloud gaming. We hope you agree, and we know the proof is in the playing. There’s also more feature goodness coming to Stadia too - stuff we can’t talk about just yet, but we promise to share when we can. Have a great weekend, Stadians.
The proof is in the playing (which you won’t be able to do after January 18th).

March 2022 - “2022 and beyond”

Several new features for Stadia were announced at the developer summit. The feature was called "click-to-play trials." It was basically demos. The company said it would be coming to all Stadia titles in the years to come.

January 2023 is technically past the year 2022.

July 2022 — two months before the announcement

There was a rumor that Stadia was going to be shut down by the end of summer, but a spokesman for the company said that was not true. He said, "Emphasis his.." We were told to expect more news from Stadia in the near future.

Image of a tweet from Google Stadia, reading: Just a heads up Old coworker of mine is now one of the social managers for Google. They had a pretty large seminar in California this past weekend, and long story short you now can play Wavetale at no additional cost on Stadia Pro until August 1
KilledByGoogle’s tweet cited someone who claimed their info came from someone working at Google. Seems like it might’ve been legit.

Fans were reassured that Stadia is not shutting down after the Stadia account made fun of the Killed By Google account.

September 26th, 2022 — three days before the announcement

There is a new game coming to Stadia. I don't think that's true.
