  • Old age is not a cause of death.

  • The death certificate shows that Queen Elizabeth died at 96.

  • Older people are more likely to die from diseases that other people can survive.

Have you ever heard a family member say they died of old age?

That's almost never what's happening from a medical point of view. The cause of death is not caused by aging.

When we say that someone died of old age, we really mean that they died as a result of an illness or an event that a younger person would have survived.

The CDC tracks what people actually die from in the US. According to the CDC, heart disease is the most common cause of death for people over the age of 65 in the US.

When an older person's heart stops in their sleep, it's usually a quiet death. The person had a heart attack at night. Someone had a bad fall and it was downhill from there. The person probably broke a hip, survived the surgery, and then died of an infectious disease.

There can be a lot of things that claim the lives of old people. " geriatric failure to thrive" is a catchall phrase for elderly patients who may have a lot of interrelated issues.

Amy Ehrlich is a professor of clinical medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a geriatric physician at Montefiore Medical Center. We see a lot of falls, where someone falls and ends up with a broken hip. It's difficult to recover from being 104.

If we don't die as a result of aging, then what the heck is aging?

Humans lived long enough to age. People used to die frequently before their skin began to age or their muscles began to weaken, which is why we now have vaccines for diseases like Tuberculosis. People can die from gastrointestinal infections. Dehydration is a leading cause of death in children around the world.

Around the 1950s, we began living nearly twice as long as our ancestors had done a century before. We spend a lot of our lives getting old before we die, and life expectancy has been declining since the beginning of the year.

Other living organisms don't age

If we didn't age at all, what would it be like? Some animals do it that way.

The mortality rates of 46 different species were compared and found that some organisms don't age until they die. Others come out of a period of aging when they are in their 70s and continue their lives.

The chart shows what aging looks like in a modern day human. The mortality rates are red and the fertility rates are blue.

There is a sharp rise in the red line.

This life span for other creatures is not like this. The "immortal" hydra is a small freshwater animal that is 1,400 years old. It is just as likely to die at 10 as it is at 1000.

The death rate of the desert tortoise decreases with age.

What does this mean for people who want to live forever?

Scientists think we can use the knowledge of the natural world to prolong our lives.

According to Michael Rose, the director of the Network for Experimental Research on Evolution at the University of California at Irvine, aging is not a constant process that leads to death. There are books and papers on aging and evolution byRose. It's a transition between being healthy and stable.

Theoretician and Biologist Aubrey de Grey wants to use our knowledge of other organisms to prolong our lives. The proportion of people who die of age related problems is high in wealthy countries, according to de Grey. It's clear that it's the most important problem.

We can't do away with human aging because we're not hydra or tortoises. Aging is real for us. Many older people can live happily.
