Stadia is ending after three years. On January 18, 2023, the cloud-streaming platform will go offline.
Phil Harrison, Stadia's vice president and general manager, wrote on Thursday that the company made the difficult decision to shut down the service because it hasn't gained traction with users. This is despite the developed technology that allowed players to play demos from their favorite games and then purchase them later without a console.
The Stadia players have been with us from the beginning. All purchases made through the Stadia store will be returned. Through January 18, 2023, players will still have access to their games library and will be able to finish their play sessions.
Some of Stadia's legacy will live on even after it is no longer around. Given the wide scope of the platform in terms of making game demos available to everyone, Harrison said that Google sees opportunities to apply some of Stadia's technology. Harrison said that the technology will be made available to its gaming industry partners, which meshes with where we see the future of gaming headed.
The timing of Stadia's demise is notable. The news is close to the announcement of two systems that will handle cloud gaming with untold bandwidth. Users may be less enthusiastic about cloud gaming than manufacturers are.
