Court records show that a U.S. Army doctor and his wife have been charged with a crime.
Major Jamie Lee Henry and anaesthesiologist Anna Gabrielian were charged with conspiracy to disclose health information.
Gabrielian was an internist at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Henry was an internist at the hospital. Gabrielian is said to speak both English and Russian.
Henry was the first active-duty Army officer to come out as a woman.
According to the indictment, Henry and Gabrielian thought they would be giving medical information to a person at the Russian embassy in Washington.
In reality, that person was an undercover FBI agent who had approached Gabrielian in August and inquired about the assistance she had offered to the Russian embassy. The indictment states that Gabrlelian met that agent in a Baltimore hotel room.
She told the FBI agent that she was motivated by patriotism to provide any assistance she could to Russia, even if it meant being fired or jailed, according to the indictment.
She called the agent to make sure the couple were committed to helping Russia.
The couple discussed with the agent the need for them to keep their integrity.
Gabrielian and Henry were told to flee the U.S. if they were told to expose their communications to the government.
Gabrilelian told the agent that she was willing to help Russia even if it meant being fired or jailed.
Gabrelian told the agent that Henry was a more important source for Russia than she was because he had more helpful information.
Gabrielian and Henry had a meeting with the agent at the hotel.
Henry explained to the undercover agent that they were committed to assisting Russia, and he had looked into volunteering to join the Russian Army, but Russia wanted people with combat experience.
The charging document states that Henry believes that the United States is using Ukrainians as a proxy for their own hatred towards Russia.
Henry said that Gabrielian had recommended a book about a top Soviet spy. The author of that book was trained in the military intelligence system of the Soviet Union.
The undercover agent was told by Henry that he wanted to help as much as he could until the US declared war against Russia. At that time. According to the indictment, I will have ethical issues I have to work through.
Gabrielian said he would work through the ethical issues, according to the indictment.
The Department of Justice and the Army did not reply to CNBC's requests for comment.
