The boss of Hays Travel has called for the industry to work together to prevent a rise in holiday cancellation.

Hays said the company had come out of Covid in a financially stronger position but was now seeing some cancellation.

Hays warned that it was too early to tell if the costofliving crisis would cause consumers to cancel more often.

Flexible terms and conditions were introduced by most travel firms to make it easier for consumers to change and cancel holidays.

Although most companies have begun to return to traditional terms and conditions, consumers now think they can cancel at the last minute.

Hays said there were some cancellation. It is a huge challenge for agents and suppliers.

She said it was difficult for the industry as a whole because of the degree of flexibility.

She said that it would be better for the industry if we could all agree on some changes.

Nick Marks, managing director of Baldwins Travel, made comments at the Future of Travel spring forum.

Marks said that agents were doubling up and that policies should return to what they were.

Hays said that clarity on the government's action on tackling the cost of fuel crisis would help determine consumer booking patterns over the coming months.

Si Morris-Green, director of sales and marketing at Classic Collection and Classic Package Holidays, said that the operator had tightened its terms and conditions as it felt the flexibility needed to "diminish"

The right thing to do was to firm up our terms and conditions.

The terms could be tightened up because the freedom to travel is a lot greater now than it was.
