A trollish, racist push notification was sent out by the hackers after they gained access to Apple News.

The magazine had been hacked, but it was other users who posted the actual push notifications, which were incredibly not safe for work.

Apple News characterized the push notification as "incredibly offensive" in its statement, and a look at the topic shows that that characterization is quite accurate.

The uncensored version of the notification contained a racist slur and a reference to sex. The message was signed by a person named "Thrax," which seems to be the name of the still at-large hacker.

Insult to Injury

The bad actors were able to gain access to the push alert system because the content management system had been compromised, according to Fast Co. The hackers sent out the notification along with the racist language that was published on the Fast Co website, which is currently offline.

The hacker or hackers posted a message detailing how they gained access to the Fast Co CMS, by figuring out a "ridiculously easy" password, according to the hacker statement. A link to a forum where stolen database information is posted amongst thieves was included in the statement.

We have covered a lot of websites this month. Gaining access to push notifications for an Apple property is a big deal, and the use of it to send hate speech to thousands of subscribers is egregious.
