There are multiple schools on the street where the shooting happened. The incident is no longer going on. The shooting happened at an alternative kindergarten through 12th grade school that is located on the same block as three other schools. The day before Wednesday's shooting, Oakland's chief of police announced plans to address the city's ongoing gun violence by increasing officers' presence in areas where gun violence is concentrated.
After more than two years of gun violence, this most recent shooting happened. Most of the people killed this year have been with guns. At this time last year there were more than 100 killings.
Homicides and gun violence in Oakland were at historic lows prior to the Pandemic. By mid 2020 gun violence was on the rise and the usual refuges of school, community centers and violence prevention workers were not available. There were more deaths at the end of the year than there were at the beginning.
There has been an increase in homicides. At least 14 people under the age of 20 were killed in the year 2020. Demetrius Fleming-Davis, an Oakland native, was shot and killed in the back of a truck.
There are a lot of plans that we can't make because of our age. Cianna Williams is a 19-year-old friend of Fleming-Davis.
The story was changed to say that the shooting happened at a grade school.
