Scientists are trying to figure out how bad the leaks are in the Baltic Sea.
The 700 meter circle of water was bubbling with methane from the three major leaks in the underwater system that transports natural gas from Russia to Germany and the rest of Europe. It could be a sign of an environmental disaster.
The potential for a massive and highly damaging emission event is very worrisome due to the fact that a ton of methane has a climate impact more than 80 times that of CO2 The impact to the climate will be disastrous if these pipes fail, and it could be even worse.
Given the ongoing tensions between European countries and Russia, it is likely that the leaks were sabotaged.
According to CNN, the affected pipes are thought to have contained pressurized gas. Seismologists could not say if the underwater explosions were connected to the leaks.
It's not great news but experts will have to figure out how bad the leak will be.
