The biggest and fastest-growing player in the smart home market has been Amazon. Four new devices, a new Fire TV, two new Ring cameras, and a bedside sleep tracker are included in its most recent expansion. The new devices were on display at the event.

A month ago, Amazon made an offer to buy iRobot, the maker of the smart Roomba vacuum. The Federal Trade Commission wants more information from both iRobot and Amazon before making a decision.

The FTC was asked to block the acquisition by 20 groups. Concerns about privacy were cited in the letter.

Amazon takes its responsibilities to customers very seriously. According to Amazon's vice president of Trust and Privacy, if they were to acquire iRobot, that wouldn't change.

Most of the products that are compatible with the voice assistant are not owned by the company. Three months after buying Ring for $1 billion, it bought Blink for $90 million. It paid $97 million for a mesh wi-fi system to help connect multiple smart devices in the home.

Amazon’s Eero mesh WiFi systems are shown inside the Amazon smart lab in Seattle, Washington, on September 9, 2022.

Amazon gained access to which devices and appliances are being used with the acquisition of Eero. They can see how much internet traffic goes to a person's house. That gives you a lot of information. One of the advocacy groups that signed the letter to the FTC was the Institute for Local Self- Reliance, and they said that Amazon got some insight from that.

Marja Koopmans, director of Smart Home at Amazon, told CNBC that the data from its devices is only used to improve the capabilities of its connected home network.

The Echo was a runaway success when it was introduced by Amazon. By the time the first smart speaker was introduced, it had sold five million devices. Apple introduced its first smart home device in the middle of the last decade.

On the first day, we didn't think about smart home, but we learned from customers that they wanted to use their voice for more than entertainment.

The first smart light was added to by Amazon. Koopmans was chief marketing officer at the time she joined Amazon to lead the smart home operation.

There are hundreds of millions of devices connected to the internet. It was less than a few years ago. The growth is fast.

After it opened its voice-activation platform to outside developers in 2015, the number ofAlexa-enabled products began to increase. The US smart home market was worth $113 billion last year, up 20% from the previous year.

The number of smart home devices shipped by Amazon increased from the year before. The runner-up was 6.5% and the third was 5.6%.

In the United States, more than 75% of households had at least one smart home device.

The adoption rate for smart home and office devices used to be around 12%, according to Adam Wright, who leads research on smart home and office devices atIDC.

Amazon’s Ring Video Doorbell 4 is shown at the Amazon smart home lab in Seattle, Washington, on September 9, 2022.

Wright says his home is filled with a lot of gadgets. Users with a smart speaker are more likely to buy an additional smart home device. Wright isn't completely optimistic.

Wright said the value of the smart home to him remained uncertain. My entire smart home experience is not good with these devices.

CNBC visited the smart home lab in Seattle where more than 45 connected devices were on display.

The fridge is connected to the internet. We have a thermostat, Ring doorbell, cameras, vacuum, indoor air quality monitor, TV, and a few other things.

In earnings, Amazon doesn't break out device sales. It is definitely expanding its collection with a string of acquisitions. Wright thinks that the proposed iRobot deal is more than just selling vacuums.

It is hard to make a lot of margins on the hardware and the device. The acquisition of a massive data set can help them understand the floor plans and the mapping of people's homes.

It has a camera in the front which is unnerving. It can show you what you have in your house. What are you hoping to add to that? Sarah Miller, who founded the American Economic Liberties Project, signed a letter to the FTC seeking to block the iRobot deal.

Colin Angle, the CEO of iRobot, best known for the Roomba vacuum cleaner, poses for a portrait in Bedford, MA on Jan. 22, 2020.

Customers welcome iRobot into their homes because they trust that our products will help them do more, and that we will respect their information, according to the company's CEO. That trust is taken seriously by us. Customer data and privacy will be retained once we are acquired by Amazon.

Privacy and security is a huge area of investment for Amazon and will continue to be.

The inside of the home can be mapped by other smart home devices. The new feature of smart lights will allow them to turn on or off based on your presence in a room, and it will be possible to do that with the help of the new feature.

Amazon introduced a flying indoor Ring camera and a robotic household monitor with a face called Astro. They can be used to check in on elderly loved ones.

The American Economic Liberties Project's Miller is worried about the number of devices that can collect user data.

To track your shopping habits, to track your movements, to track even where things are placed in your home. They can use this data profile to expand and grow their business. To push out competitors that were never going to surveil you.

The attorney generals of the District of Columbia and California have filed lawsuits against Amazon, accusing it of anticompetitive practices.

Amazon states that it only uses data in an aggregated way.

Rouhi said that the focus of the company has always been to use the data on behalf of the customer and to improve the services.

Amazon’s Echo Show 10 is deomnstrated with a built-in camera cover at the Amazon smart lab in Seattle, Washington, on September 9, 2022.

When Ring was bought by Amazon, there were privacy concerns.

Every single device feature and service has privacy built in from the beginning. Rouhi said that they work hard to keep their customers' information safe and to give them transparency and control over their experience.

One way Amazon has added user control is by giving you the option to schedule the deletion of your history and data. The microphones can be silenced and the cameras can be blocked with a built-in cover.

Users can post or give video to law enforcement on the Ring Neighbors app. Amazon has come under fire for sharing Ring video doorbell footage with law enforcement.

Rouhi said that they understand the sensitive nature of videos and do their best to protect the interests of their customers.

The Ring Video Doorbell 4 has an option for two-way video encryption and the new security cameras allow users to exclude recording in privacy zones.

The microphone on the device can be silenced. Amazon says that it's not always listening.

Rouhi said there wasn't a room of people that monitored customers.

Rouhi told CNBC that Amazon doesn't sell customer data from devices and services and doesn't plan to do so in the future.

The data coming in from these new capabilities will help devices work in unison for what it calls Ambient Intelligence, according to Amazon. More than 30% of experiences are initiated by Amazon's voice assistant, according to the company.

If the air quality drops, an indoor air quality monitor can turn on a fan or a purification device.

In the smart home lab, Amazon showed how its smart thermostat can save customers money on their electric bill by automatically turning it off when they are away, using a voice activated device. She said that the data collected by all the connected devices in the home taught her how to use the voice assistant.

We get a lot of different data points. Devices are not being used actively. We know that you have left, so we are using your phone to find you. You could have said, "Hey, I'm leaving" and then switched on your alarm system.

Amazon’s Smart Thermostat is shown inside the Amazon smart lab in Seattle, Washington, on September 9, 2022.

There is a new data enabled capability on the show. If you want to see the screen, the device rotates around the room. Amazon can now use facial recognition software to create a "visual ID" for each of its users.

Rouhi said that if you live in a household with multiple people and you go into the kitchen in the morning, you may have a different routine and music.

Amazon got a bit of criticism for that. People were wondering how this could become a major intrusion into privacy. It was rarely compared against the same technology that is on our phone.

Users can choose to use the shared network called Sidewalk. It allows devices to connect to each other, allowing them to stay connected even if the home internet goes out.

If you have Ring smart lighting, you would have to be within a certain range for it to turn on and off. Rouhi said that Sidewalk could go up to a mile away.

It's possible that the three of them will play better together soon. The Matter standard will allow devices to work across platforms instead of only answering to one voice assistant.

The home will always be heterogeneous, meaning you will have many different brands, different devices, and different companies in your home.
