Most people probably didn't know that Aer Lingus was going to launch a new flight. Aer Lingus will launch a new route between Dublin and Cleveland on May 21,23. On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays the flight will operate. The flight leaves Dublin at 3:30PM and arrives in Cleveland at 6:30PM. The plane left Cleveland at 8:20PM and arrived in Dublin at 8:50AM.Aer Lingus launching Dublin to Cleveland route
The flight is blocked at 8hr 20min in the west and 7hr 30min in the east. The plane used by Aer Lingus will have 184 seats. Business class seats and economy class seats are included. Read my review of the class.
There is a new flight that can be booked. Business class award space is usually two seats per flight and can be booked with the British Airways Executive Club.
This will be Cleveland's only trans-Atlantic flight when it starts. Icelandair and WOW Air both announced flights to Cleveland in the same year. The airlines pulled out due to weak demand.
Aer Lingus launched flights in Cleveland. Why now start service to a new city when the airline cut some routes during the Pandemic?
Subsidies are the answer Aer Lingus will get a lot of money for this route. Aer Lingus will be getting a $600,000 grant over the next three years to maintain this service. Additional funding will be provided by Jobs Ohio and the City, County, GCP, Team NEO, and Destination Cleveland will combine for $2.4 million in funding.
Good air service can be good for the local economy, but more often than not it doesn't work out the way governments hope. Subsidized service usually lasts for as long as the incentives are in place and then the route is canceled once that is over.
9% of the population in Cleveland is of Irish descent, so that should help with this route. That isn't enough to sustain this route.
There was a billboard in Cleveland welcoming Aer Lingus to the city even though the airline hadn't announced it. I don't know if someone jumped the gun or what happened. It is cool to see this come to fruition a few years later.
Aer Lingus will be opening a new route between Dublin and Cleveland in May of 2020. The service will run 4 times a week. The route is made possible by millions of dollars in support from the local community.
What do you think of Aer Lingus?
