The Batman has a sidekick. Tom has a friend. Both McCartney and Goldy have Lennon.

The dynamic duo manning the two corners of the Cards infield were Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado. They could become the first teammates to finish 1-2 inMVP voting in 22 years if they do that this season.

"When you're in the moment, you try not to sit back too much but there's times I'm at home and realize this is pretty fun, what we're doing." We are playing good defense and our 3-4 hole is good.

They have been better than bad this year. They have combined for 65 home runs and224 runs driven in, which is nearly a third of the total runs scored by St. Louis. Arenado has struck out just 71 times, by far the least of anyone with 30 or more home runs.

Goldschmidt said it was nice to know that he would get the job done.

Both Goldschmidt and Arenado came to St. Louis before the 2020 season, Goldschmidt with the Arizona D-backs and Arenado with the Rockies.

Their previous teams went through turmoil and turnover. They each have a deep understanding for what the other is going through and they now have one another to depend on.

Arenado said that Goldschmidt made the move easy. He did the most for me when I was not doing well. I was unable to repeat my swing. I told him it was frustrating because I was getting pitches to hurt me. I was told by him that he had gone through what I was going through. He showed me how to fix it.

The two of them talk hitting all the time. We discuss what the other teams are doing. He has helped me a lot.

While their games are similar, and that has improved their ability to get each other through tough stretches, their personality isn't exactly alike.

Arenado said that he was the bad cop and that he was the good cop. He is the angel on the shoulder. I get more angry with him than he does. He is more patient.

I'm a bit crazy in a way. We click well because of that.

As his career comes to a close, here are some of our favorite stories about him.

While giving a noncommittal smile at the assessment of their personality, Goldschmidt turned the conversation back to their play on the field, where he's more concerned with keeping Arenado's Gold Glove streak intact. Arenado has won the award nine times over the course of his career.

After singing his teammate's praises, Goldschmidt snatched a low throw from Arenado to complete a tough play. The gesture was followed by a nod of appreciation from the third baseman to the first baseman.

Arenado said that he saved him from a big mistake.

Goldschmidt's at-bats give Arenado an opportunity to see what's coming at him when he steps in as the Cardinal's top hitter.

Arenado said that he gets an idea of what will happen to him when pitchers pitch him. Both of us are right-handed so we get attacked a lot. We have the same characteristics, but we are not the same player.

After admiring each other from afar, Arenado and Goldschmidt got to know each other when they played for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

Arenado remembers getting his number and texting him how he was doing. He handled himself well. I wanted to know what the secret was in a way.

We speak the same language.

There are many similarities between the two. Both Arenado and Goldschmidt were in their prime when they moved to teams. Arenado's deal has an opt-out after this season, and most wouldn't bet against him staying in St. Louis.

Arenado said he felt like he fit in.

The next generation of stars will be able to reach some of baseball's most famous offensive feats when superstars like Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera are done playing.

A future watch.

With games left on the schedule and a postseason yet to take place, the focus will not be on Arenado's contract status or the battle for the Most Valuable Player. The Cards won the NL Central on Tuesday night and both Arenado and Goldschmidt want to play well into October. Baseball fans will be hearing a lot about Goldschmidt and Arenado when it comes to the awards.

Arenado said it had been amazing. It feels good that we're both playing well, even though we're winning ball games. I wouldn't play well when he was playing well. I would play well if he was playing badly. We weren't able to click. It was like we would get a hit someday.

It has been a lot of fun to do it together.
